Situated in north Austria, Linz is the capital of the Sanao State.
It has the biggest port on the upper reaches of the Danube River,
and is also the industrial, business and communication hub. Established
in the 13th century, the city has a population of 203 thousand
in 1971. There are many cultural relics including St. Martin Church
built in the 8th century and the Town Hall built in the 7th century.
The State Museum has many collections including paintings, folk
art works and Roman craftworks.
Linz¡¯s major industries including iron & steel,
chemical, machinery, timber processing and textile. In 1938, the
city built the Union Steel Plant and the Chemical Plant. During
the years of 1948-1952, The Union Steel Plant invented oxygen
furnace steel-making techniques, which was promoted to other countries
of the whole world. The Chemical Fiber Corporation in the suburb
of Linz has kept trade relationships with China for over 20 years.
The light industries include wool and cotton spinning, velvet
and carpet making. Food industry is also famous in the world for
its excellent bacon skills. Linz is a business center with businessmen
from all over the world gathering here every year. In 1832, the
first railway in Europe was built in Linz so the history of train
transportation began. There are developed canals in Linz with
a great number of big cargo ships and luxurious yachts sailing
in.
Linz put importance on culture and education causes and set
up literature councils, literature council libraries, seminaries,
teachers colleges, art institutes, handicraft institutes, martial
training courts, dancing and horsemanship schools, schools for
the blind and dumb, and the famous Brookena Musical Institute.
The musicians such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert all had
ever been living in Linz during their music career.
In 1983, Linz and Chengdu were concluded as sister cities.
